Performance Standards

The BC Performance Standards are a teacher-developed resource for K-10 classrooms. Of particular interest to English teachers are the standards for reading, writing, and social responsibility. The intention of the standards is to describe various levels of achievement via rubrics and to provide exemplars showing each level. They are incredibly useful and because of that they are ubiquitous, allowing teachers and students to see what “good” looks like throughout the province. Click here to visit the ministry’s Performance Standards website, where you’ll find downloadable PDF files.

Performance standards were never developed for grades 11 and 12. However, Coquitlam-developed equivalents can be found in the Rubrics section below.

You can also check Kyle McKillop’s site for his collected rubrics, including rubrics developed with students this semester.

The Literacy Assessment is a cross-curricular assessment of reading and writing skills. To learn more about it, you can view Neetu Dhaliwal’s wonderfully detailed slides below (these are intended to help build support across your whole school), or visit the ministry’s site.
